The Bluebird Recovery Program of Minnesota (BBRP) runs a nest box donation program to help expand the placement of bluebird houses on public lands across Minnesota. The Lake Links Association applied for and received two houses for the revitalized Streetcar Park in Mahtomedi. We strategically placed them in the park last spring, replacing one older bluebird house that had fallen down.
A neighbor of the park and active bird watcher, Allen Short, agreed to monitor the houses. This entails a weekly check to track nesting success, among other things. This year, a pair of beautiful bluebirds took up housekeeping and raised four young ones. Yay! A pair usually nests twice a year, but the wet spring was a challenge for them.
In a 2023 almost 12,000 bluebirds fledged across Minnesota, according to the BBRP. And with every new set of houses, we help to grow the population of these little blue gems.
