More than 100 local residents turned out Friday, January 5, for a winter stroll along the newly lighted stretch of the Lake Links Trail from the Mahtomedi District Education Center to the Depot Creek covered bridge at Streetcar Park.
In addition to the crisp winter walk and chance to view the covered bridge in all of its holiday splendor, guests enjoyed cookies and hot cider and had an opportunity to visit with Lake Links Association board members about recent progress and next steps for completing the around-the-lake trail. A group of local volunteers led by Mahtomedi resident Cindy Rasmussen also presented a proposed plan to enhance Streetcar Park and the trail segment near the covered bridge.
During the stroll, Lake Links safety coordinator Ian Harding provided advice about the importance of pushing the activation button every time at pedestrian crossings equipped with rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFBs). Pushing the button increases the safety of both pedestrians and drivers, especially where there is limited visibility. Lake Links board members handed out candy prizes to those who pressed the button.
Best of all – at least in the eyes of one young attendee – was a raffle for a new Reid Hercules Fat Tire Bike courtesy of ROAM Bike Shop in White Bear Lake. Congratulations and happy riding to lucky winner Glenn Carroll!
