Residents of communities surrounding White Bear Lake have an extraordinary opportunity to leave a legacy for future generations by donating to a new fund to enhance recreational amenities at Streetcar Park in Mahtomedi.
Â
The park, on the site of the northern terminus of the streetcar line that once ran from St. Paul to Mahtomedi, has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years. The Runze family and the Lake Links Association teamed up to build a covered bridge over Depot Creek, which runs through the public space. Local volunteers, including Cindy Rasmussen, Heidi Bennett, Lindsay Buck, and Katie Macke, and Ian Harding from the Lake Links Association, and many others have donated hundreds of hours to tearing out invasive plants and bringing in healthy native species. Landscape designer Lindsay Buck donated her time to develop a vision and specific plans for the area. The Steve Wolgamot Lake Links Trail Enhancement Fund provided funds for facilities. The City of Mahtomedi, led by Bob Goebel, Ken Bell, and Natalie Fleischaker, gave both time and money to move the project forward.
Â
From clearing out invasives and dead trees to planting native bushes and trees, the team of local resident volunteers, Lake Links Association members, and city employees have worked tirelessly to create a welcoming environment. The addition of a trailhead information kiosk, picnic area, and more amenities has made Streetcar Park a welcoming place for outdoor activities and relaxation.

Now you can be part of the picture, too! In the final push to finish the park, organizers have launched a campaign to raise $6,500 to continue the revitalization effort with additional native bush and tree plantings, pollinator plantings, screening and concrete pad for the portable toilet, and more. Donations will be matched by volunteer time and City of Mahtomedi employee hours needed to install the facilities.
